Abstract: This dissertation entitled "A Linguistic Analysis of the Strategies Employed in the English Translation of the Textbook: A Case Study ofSocial Studies for Grade-VIII" is an attempt to find out theprocess andstrategiesused in translation. The main purpose of this study is toanalyzeandevaluate theprocess of translation from linguistic criteria and to findout the gaps. The data for the study were collected from both Nepali versiontextbook "Samajik Shikshya" and English version "Social Studies"ofGrade -VIII. This research is mainly concerned with analyzing thesentence structures used in both versions of the textbook and to find outthe linguistic gaps that occur in them. The research findings show that structurally three types andfunctionally four types of sentences are used in both the ST and the TT.Similarly, various strategies of translation viz. omission, addition,substitution, etc. have been applied in the TT. The study consists of four chapters, which are given below.Chapter one deals with the introduction. It consists of general background of the study, review of the related literature, objectives of thestudy, significance of the study and the definitions of the specific terms. The second chapter i.e. methodology enlarges on the sources ofdata, process of data collection and limitations of the study. The third chapter analyses, interprets and presents the data.Descriptive and analytical approachesare used for the purpose. Chapterfour presents the findings of the study on the basis of theanalysis and interpretation of data. On the basis of the findings somerecommendations and pedagogical implications are drawn. This chapteris followed by references and appendices.
