Abstract: The research entitled"An Analysis of English Textbook: A Caseof Higher Secondary Compulsory English Grade XII"is an attempt toanalyze the grade XII English textbook in terms of physical and academicaspects and find out whether the language materials used in the textbooksare sufficient to meet the objectives set out in the curriculum fordeveloping focusing on reading and writing language skills. for thisresearch work the researcher read the textbooks 'Meaning into Words'upper intermediate and 'The Heritage of Words' and different booksrelated to the textbook analysis to collect data and then prepared twoseparate sets of questionnaire for three subject experts and twenty subjectteachers who have at least a year of teaching experience in the +2 level ingovernment school in Chitwan district. The obtained data were tabulated and analyzed using a simplestatistical tool of percentage. The major findings of the study are:Readingand writing materials are sufficient. The distribution of reading and writing materials is found satisfactory. The textbooks providesufficient grammatical structures, reading passages, and writing exercises.The textbooks also, focus on communicative skill. Broad functional areasof language are covered. The cover design and colour is suitable. The sizeof the books are appropriate. The quality of both books is good. Thetextbooks do not represent the cultural values of Nepalese society. Someof the unitsappear to be much above the linguistic competence of 12 graders. The textbooks lack pronunciation aspect of language. Some ofthe pictures and illustrations in the texts are ambigious and difficult todeal with them. The quality of the paper is not so good. The books haveweak bindings. VIII th The study has four chapters. The first chapter deals with theintroduction. It consists of general background, defining curriculum,syllabus and course of study, textbook, literature review, objectives of thestudy and significance of the study. The second chapter concerns with the methodology used to carryout the research works. Chapter three includes analysis and interpretation of the data,analysis of the books and the subject teachers, and the subject experts, theresearchers perception on the qualities of the textbooks and thecalculation of the different views. Chapter four presents the findings and recommendations which aresummed up from the analysis and interpretation of the data collected forthe purpose of research.
