Abstract: The present thesis entitled "Effectiveness of Folktales in Teaching Reading Comprehension" aims at finding out effectiveness offolktale as a teaching material in reading comprehension. The researcherhimself was involved in the experimental teaching for the purpose ofcarrying out the research. The tests were developed for the collection ofdata. The researcher collected data from the sampled population offortystudents of grade nine of a private school. The total students were given apre-test in order to test their reading comprehension ability. On the basisof the pre-test result, the students were divided into two groups based onodd and even ranking of their individual scores.Both the groups weretaught for about a month keeping in different class. Group A was taughtonly folktales whereasGroup B was taught the materials from the textbook of grade nine. Then, result of the two tests was compared tofind outthe effectiveness of folktales in teaching reading comprehension. It was found that folktale as a teaching material has relatively abetter impact in teaching reading comprehension. The present thesis has been divided into four chapters. Chapter oneis an introduction to the research. It includes the general background,objectives of the study, the literature review and significance of the study. Chapter two includes the methodology adopted to carry out theresearch. In other words, it includes the sources of data, population of thestudy, sampling procedure, tools and process of data collection andlimitations of the study. Chapter three consists of the analysis and interpretation of data.Chapter four consists of the findings and recommendationsof the study.This chapter is followed by references and appendices.
