Abstract: This research attempts to find out different techniques applied inteaching reading and to identify most commonly used techniques in teachingreading at primary level in different public schools. For this purpose theresearcher selectedthe public schools of Banke District as his field ofstudy.He visited thirty(30) teachers teaching English at primary level of differentpublic schools of Banke district.Thenhe used research tools to collect datafrom the sampled population i.e.30 teachers teaching English at primarylevel. The main research tools were questionnaire and class observationcheck list. At first, the researcher distributed a set of questionnaire to eachteacher and requested them to respond tothem. Similarly,he observed threeclasses each of thirty teachers while teaching reading items in theirrespective classes. After observing three classes each of those thirtyteachers, the researcher collected the questionnaire and arranged them withobservation check lists. Then both of the items (questionnaire andobservation check list) were analyzed and interpreted statistically anddescriptively. The findings of the study have shown that groupwork,pair workdemonstrationandexplanationare generally used where asdrill is the mostcommonly used techniquesin teaching reading atprimary level. This thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter deals withgeneral background of the study, review of related literature, objectives ofthe study and significance of the study. ix The second chapter deals with the methodology adopted to carry outthe research. In other words, it includes the source of data, population of thestudy, tools for datacollection,process of data collection and limitation ofthe study. The third chapter deals with analysis and interpretationof data. Thedata have been analyzed and interpreted on the basis of the responsesmentioned by the sampled population and three class observation check listsof each sampled population. Chapter four consists of the findingsand recommendations as well aspedagogical implications.
