Abstract: ABSTRACT This study attempts to identify Grade X students' proficiency in the use ofcommunicative functions studying inpublic schools of Kathmandu and Lalitpurdistricts. For the study, the researcher took sample population from ten publicschools, five from each Kathmandu and Lalitpur district. Six students consisting of50% boys and 50 % girls from each school were selected as the subjects of thestudy. A set of test items was prepared consisting of 22 questions from eachlanguage function i.e. two questions from one function from Grade IX curriculum.The responses of the respondents were recorded in audiocassette forinterpretation. This study is divided into four chapters.The first chapter consists of the basic theoretical aspect of the research which includes general background, communicative functions of language,language functions used in data collection, relationship between structures andfunctions, literature review, objectives of the study and significance of the study. The second chapter tries to give an account of the methodology applied tocarry out the research work along with the limitations of the study. The third chapter deals with the analysis of data using statistical tools tomake the study more objective and accurate. It mainly includes schools wiseanalysis of the students' proficiency, function wise analysis of the students'proficiency and item wise analysis of errors. The fourth chapter presents the list of findings and some recommendationsmade on the basis of the analysis and interpretation of the data. The most striking feature of this study is its findings. Based on the collecteddata, the researcher came to the conclusion that the students are weaker inrelating language functions with their correct exponents. It has also been showed that most of the students use essay typeexpression when they are asked questions of certain situations.
