Title: A Study on the Techniques of Teaching Reading in English at Secondary Level

Abstract: This research attempts to find out different techniques applied in teaching reading and toidentify the most commonly used techniques in teaching reading at secondary level indifferent public schools. For this purpose the researcher selected the public schools ofBanke district as his field of study. He visited forty (40) teachers teaching English atdifferent public schools of Banke district. The main research tools were questionnaire andclass observation check list. At first, the researcher distributed a set of questionnaire toeach teacher and requested them to response to it. Similarly, he observed three classeseach of forty teachers while teaching reading items in their respective classes. Afterobserving three classes each of those forty teachers, he collected the questionnaire andarranged them with observation check list. Then both of the items (questionnaire andobservation check list) were analyzed and interpreted statistically and descriptively. Thefindings of the study have shown that group work, pair work and demonstration aregenerally used where as explanation is the most commonly used technique in teachingreading at secondary level. This thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter deals with general background ofthe study, review of related literature, objectives of the study and significance of thestudy. Thesecond chapter deals with the methodology adopted to carry out the research.In other words, it includes the sources of data, population of the study, tools for datacollection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. The third chapter dealswith analysis and interpretation of data. The data have been analyzed and interpreted onthe basis of the responses mentioned by the sampled population and class observationcheck lists of each sampled population. Chapter four consists of the findings andrecommendations as well as pedagogical implications.
