Title: Proficiency in the Use of Adverbs by Grade Eight Students In Parsa District

Abstract: The main purpose of this study was to find out theproficiency of the grade eightstudents of Parsadistrict in the use of adverbs and compare theirproficiency in terms of schools, area and sex. The sample of the study consisted of 120 students of grade eight of ParsaDistrict. For that, six different schools (three community schoolsand threeinstitutional schools) were selected purposively from both urban and rural areasequally. Out of these six schools, twenty students from each school (10 boysand 10 girls) were selected randomly. A set of test itemswas prepared tocollect the data. The data, thusobtained, were marked and tabulated verysystematically. Then analysisand interpretation were done on the basis of thetabulated data in accordance with the set objectives.The findings of the studyare given below: Most of the adverbs used in grade eight English textbook areformed from adjectives by adding-ly, e.g slowly, quickly, furiously etc. Theoverall proficiency of the students in the use of adverbs was found to besatisfactory since they crossed 50% marks. The study has been presented in four chapters: introduction, methodology,analysis and interpretation, and finding and recommendations. The first chapter comprisesofgeneral background, introduction to adverbs,review of related literature, objectives and significanceof the study. Thesecond chapter deals with the methodology adopted to carry out thisresearch. It contains the source of data(both primary and secondary),population of the study, sampling procedures, tools for data collection, pilotstudy. Process of data collection, limitation of the study and data analysisprocedure. The third chapter deals with analysis and interpretation of data. This chapterconsists of four parts. Analysis of the total proficiency in adverbs, item wiseanalysis of the total proficiency, comparisonof the total proficiency of differentsexes both within and between the community and institutionalschools and VIII comparison of the total proficiency of different sexes within and between theurban and rural area. The final chapter presents the findings and recommendations. Findings arederived from the analysis and interpretation of data carried outin chapter threeandrecommendations are made on the basis of findings.
