Abstract: The present thesis entitled “Contextualized Use of Lexical Items in English” was aimed to find out the contextualized use of lexical items in determining their meanings in the textbook materials. The researcher himself was involved in the field survey for the purpose of carrying out the research. The test items included existent and non-existent words developed for the collection of data. The collected data from the sample dpopulation of 80 students of grade eight studying in different four public schools (i.e.twenty students with equal number of boys and girls from each school) of Mahottary and Dhanusha districts were selected through disproportionate stratified random sampling procedure by applying the technique of fishbowl drawing. The collected data were marked and tabulated. On the basis of marks obtained, the collected data were analyzed and interpreted in tabular form, and simple statistical tools such as average and percentage were used to determine the meaning of lexical items in the textbook materials. It was found that the overall contextualized use of lexical items in English of grade eight students was satisfactory since they secured 51.06% marks in total. The thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one is introductory which includes general background, review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. Chapter two deals with methodology which includes sources of data collection, population of study, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Chapter three is concerned with the analysis and interpretation of data .Chapter four consists of the findings and recommendations of the study. Finally, this chapter is followed by references and appendices.
