Abstract: This is a field-oriented research on the vocabulary development of commonedible items in primary graduates of public and private schools. The students were selected from four schools of Bagmati Zone, two from urban areas and two from rural areas. The sample population consists of eighty students selected from the four Schools just mentioned using the stratified random sampling procedure with equal representation. Two sets of questionnaire were used for data collection, one on the active vocabulary and the other on passive vocabulary. On the basis of these data appropriateness of the test items was determined using some statistical tools of Facility Value, Discrimination Index and central tendencies of mean, median and mode . The main objectives of this research are to study vocabulary development of the students of Grade VI in different varieties of edible items. The other objectives are to make comparative study of the vocabulary development of Government Schools vs Private Schools,Rural Schools vs Urban Schools,Boys vs Girls,Item-wise comparison, Active vocabulary vs Passive vocabulary and determine the appropriateness of test items. The analysis showed that vocabulary development in edible items of the students is not very satisfactory. Relatively speaking, the vocabulary development of the students of Urban and Private schools is found to be better than that of the students of Rural and Government schools. This indicates two things: (i) more attention needs to be given to vocabulary development of primary schools, and (ii) greater attention needs to be given to the students of rural schools and government schools in this regard. The study consists of four chapters as follows:Chapter I consists of general background, review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. Chapter II deals with Methodology that encompasses sources of data, population of the study, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study.Chapter III consists of Analysis and Interpretation of the data. The data are analyzed and interpreted using various tables and statistical tools of FV, DI and central tendencies.Chapter IV consists of findings and recommendations. [Note:The primary graduates in question are the students who have successfully completed the primary level of education and have just joined Grade VI.]
