A Study on the Vocabulary Items Used in My English Book IV

Abstract

The present study entitled“A Study on the Vocabulary Items Used in My English Book IV” is an attempt to study the major word class vocabulary items used in the textbook for Grade Four on the basis of total number, parts of speech, frequency of occurrence,phonological structure and morphological structure. The data of this study include all the major word class vocabulary items used in My English Book IV, published by Curriculum Development Centre.  683 different vocabulary items related to major word class are found in the textbook.  The word 'day' has the highest number of frequency of occurrence. Among nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives, noun has the highest number of frequencyin the textbook. One syllabic, two syllabic, three syllabic, four syllabic and five syllabic words are found in the textbook. Two or three consonants in sequence at the beginning of the words and three and four consonants in sequence at the end of the words arefoundin the textbook.  Both mono morphemic and poly morphemic words are used in the textbook. The study is divided into four chapters. Chapter one introduces the study in terms of the general background, review of related literature,objectives of the study and definition of the specific terms. IX Chapter two deals with the methodology adopted for the study under which the sources of data, process of data collection and limitations of the study are presented. Chapter three consists of analysis and interpretation of vocabulary items. Mainly descriptive and analytical approaches have been used for the purpose. Chapter Four deals with the major findings and recommendations of the study.
