Abstract: This research study sheds light on the existentially uncertain character, Scobie due to his inability to distinguish between Divine and human love. Scobie is lonely man caught in intense heart searching and inner schism. He shares his own continuous agony of mind due to his duality between a natural need for a minimum of human happiness and the exact demands for faith. The dilemma extends up to the rejecting life itself. Scobie's problem is undoubtedly a human problem. It is the human soul fighting its battle alone for the ultimate truth underlying the surface presentedby the circumstances of the world.
