Abstract
The present study entitled"The Techniques and Gaps in Translation of CulturalTerms: A Case of the Novel Kumari Shobha" is an attempt to find out the techniquesadopted in translation of cultural terms and observe gaps in the process oftranslation. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the techniques oftranslation of cultural words and to find out the gaps. For this purpose, the researcher collected two hundred cultural terms ascorpus of data for the study from Nepali version of the novel Kumari Shobha andthe corresponding words from the English version of the same book. He selectedonly one hundred and fiftycultural terms out of a total number. He categorizedthem into five different categories. Findings of the study show that ten differenttechniques such as literal, addition, deletion, claque black translation, borrowing,definition, are to be found to havebeen employed in translating cultural words ofthe novel. Among them literal translation was most frequent which covers 29%and couplet was the least one which covers 1%. Similarly, six types of gaps werefound in this study. This thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter one introduces generalbackground of topic, review of the related literature, objectives and significanceof the study. The second chapter deals with methodology adopted for the story. Itencompasses sources of data, process of data collection and limitations of thestudy. Chapter three presents an analysis and interpretation of the data collected.In this chapter data are analysed and interpreted through statistical anddescriptive approach. Chapter four presents the findings derived from the analysis of data. On thebasis of the findings some recommendations and pedagogical implications drawn.
