Abstract
"Socio-economic Status of the Muslims in Surkhet District: A Case Study of
Latikoili Village Development Committee"has been selected as the title of the study
because the Muslims of the latikoili VDC have been found to be very behind in the
socio-economic sectors and excluded as well asmarginalized group of people.Latikoili
VDC is situated southern side of the Birendranagar valley.Muslims liveonly in the
wards 1, 2 and 9 of the Latikoili VDC, highest in number in 50 VDCs and one
municipality in the district and hence these wardswere the study area of the research.
The whole 92 households were selected for the study following the census survey
method with the aim that no sampling biasness and a comprehensive investigation could
be made. The findings of the study showed that the Muslims of the study area were very
behind in education, occupation and economy. They have very poor level of hosing
facilities. Most of them ran budget deficit and compelled to borrow loan. They had a
crucial problem of drinking water and irrigation. They had very small pieces of land and
some of them don't have their land in their own name.Only two of them were SLC
passed.Their occupations were of subsistence level. They had some social institutions
like mosque, schools, cemetery and a NGO but working under the capacity. All these
affected their development, quality of life and Standard of living. Both men and women
work together and they had good and friendly social relations within the group and with
the other religious groups of the study area as well. They should be given a serious
attention by empowering them and should be included them in all developmental
activities to improve their standard of living and quality of life.
