Abstract

This thesis entitled "Comparison of sentence types between Jhagad and English" is an attempt to find out sentence types in the Jhagad language and to find similarities and differences between English and Jhagad. I used both primary and secondary sources of data for this study. The sample population of the study consisted of 40 native speakers of Jhagad including male and female in term of illiterate, literate and educated. The informants for this study have been selected from two VDCs of Sunsari district viz. Chhitaha and Tanmuna. Among the 40 informants 20 were educated and equal member of uneducated informants were there out of 20, in both group 10 were male and 10 were female informants. The researcher used purposive/Judgmental non random sampling. Interview and questionnaire for educated population were the research tools for data collection. On the basis of the collected data the analysis and interpretation was done descriptively and comparatively with the help of tables, diagrams and illustrations. From the analysis it was found that in Jhagad language has four types of sentences on the basis of formal and functional properties and three types of sentences on the basis of constructional properties as in English and each types of sentence has distinct markers and identification as in English. The thesis contains altogether five chapters. The first chapter deals with introduction which consists of general background, the Jhagad people, and the objectives of the study, significance of the study and delimitation of the study. The second chapter deals with review of the related literature, English sentence, types of sentences, formal classification of sentence, functional classification of sentence, structural classification of sentence, theoretical framework and conceptual framework. The third chapter deals with the methods and procedure of the study. It contains design of the study, source of data, population of study, sampling procedure, and tools for data collection and process of data collection. Similarly, the fourth chapter deals with the Results and Discussion of the data. It contains sentence types in the Jhagad Language with illustration and comparison of sentence types of the Jhagad language with those of English. The fifth chapter deals with Summary, Conclusion and Implications.
