Abstract
This thesis entitled“Comparing Speaking and Writing of Grade
X Students” attempts to determine and compare the level of speakingand writing proficiency of the tenth grade students of Morang district inEnglish language texts. The researcher utilized both primary andsecondary sources of data. The population of the study consisted of 100students of five government schools each having 20.
In order to find out students’ level of speaking and writing ability,two types of texts (speaking text and writing text) were taken from thecompulsory English textbook, and separate tests were prepared based onthe texts. Both texts were taken separately. Their sources were tabulatedand interpreted applying simple statistical tools like mean and percentage.
The major findings of the present study comprise that students’mother tongues affect in speaking and writing ability in EnglishLanguage. The government school students of urban region excelled thegovernment school students of rural region. However, there is nosignificant difference.
This thesis consists four chapters.Chapter one deals with general background in which speaking and
writing have been defined; features of speaking and writing, stages ofwriting skills, importanceof speaking and writing skills and literaturereview areanalyzed.
Chapter two deals with methodology which consistsofsources ofdata, population of the study, sampling procedure, tools of data collectionand limitations of the study.
Chapter three deals with analysis and interpretation of data.Chapter four incorporates findings, recommendations and the
pedagogical implications of the study.
