Impacts of human migration Ingolkot minicipality, Baglung

Abstract

Galkot Municipality, situated in the Baglung district of Gandaki Province, Nepal, has experienced significant human migration in recent years. Consequently, Galkot has become one of the highest remittance-generating areas in the country, with migration profoundly influencing the region's socio-economic and demographic landscape. The primary objectives of this research are to explore the socio-economic impacts of migration, analyze demographic shifts, and identify the drivers of migration within Galkot. Specifically, the study examines how remittances enhance local infrastructure and education, how the outflow of young people affects cultural aspects and community vitality, and what factors push and pull individuals to migrate. A mixed methods employed where quantitative data were collected through surveys, capturing migration patterns, remittances, and socio-economic impacts. Qualitative data were gathered through in-depth interviews with Municipality officials, community leaders, and migrants a deeper understanding of social impacts, migration dynamics, and community cohesion. Thematic analysis was applied to the interview insights. Additionally, secondary data on migration trends were also reviewed to contextualize the findings. The results reveal that migration has brought significant economic benefits to many households through remittances, which have improved local infrastructure, education, and living standards. However, Galkot faces notable demographic challenges, including an aging, isolation population due to the outflow of young people and children lack the parental love and care. Social consequences such as family separation and changes in traditional family structures and cultural changed were also observed. In conclusion, while migration offers substantial economic advantages, it also entails social and challenges that require attention from policymakers. Sustainable development strategies must address these issues holistically, considering both migrants and the remaining population to foster a balanced and prosperous happy society in Galkot.
