Pragmatic Equivalence in Translation; A case of Novel Shirisko Phool

Abstract

This research entitled “Pragmatic Equivalence in Translation: A Case of Novel Shirishko Phool” was conducted to find out degree of equivalence in translation of pragmatic exponents used in the novel Shirishko Phool. This was carried out in partial fulfilment for the Master of Education in English in Department of English Education T.U.Kirtipur. It was related to pragmatic exponents used in novel Shirishko Phool and its translated version Blue Mimosa. The main objective of this research was to find out degree of equivalence in translation of exponents communicating pragmatic meaning from Shirishko Phool to Blue Mimosa. This was survey research design, since minimum requirement of larger universe was surveyed with the observation checklist. It is neither completely qualitative nor perfectly quantitative. A few quantitative data were included within analytical form. All the pragmatic expressions were the universe of the study and among all the pragmatic expressions, 30 exponents were selected using nonrandom purposive sampling strategy. Selected data were analyzed and interpreted using observation checklist and intensive study of literary text. All the selected data were categorized into different degrees of equivalence. Similarly, after analysis and interpretation of data, it was found that 15 expressions (50%) of the expressions were optimally translated and other 15 expressions were under other three degrees in which, near optimum (23.33%), partial (16.66%) and poor (10%) respectively. In this study, the first chapter consists of introduction in which background of the study, statement of the problems, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definitions of the key terms are discussed. Similarly, under the second chapter, literature review, different related theoretical and empirical literature, implications of the study and conceptual framework are presented. The third chapter consists of methods and procedures of the study under which design of the study, population, sample and sampling strategy, sources of data, research tools, data collection procedure, data analysis procedure and ethical considerations are included. Similarly, the fourth chapter consists of analysis of data and interpretation of results. Finally, the fifth chapter consists of findings, conclusion and recommendations. Likewise, recommendations for different related fields are mentioned at the end of the fifth chapter and followed by references and appendices.
