A Marxist Reading in Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre

Abstract

Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyreis the depiction of struggle between the ruling class people’s mentality to that of the ruled class.The novel is a saga of hardships fought by an orphan who grows up to become an icon of changein an era when the lower class people’s sentiments were hardly recognized. The Victorian era was atimeclashed with ideological differences between thelower classpeople’s aspiration for freedom and liberty, followed by suppression of the bourgeoisie. JaneEyre, after the death of her father and mother, was raised in an orphanage among extremes of domination by her uncle and aunt, the owner of the orphanage school. However Jane, despite all the in humane treatmentimposed on her by the people bearing the sentiments of the then society, did not give up a desire to grow up to lead a decent life.Despite, all the odds imposed onherby the-then aristocratic society, could not stop Janefrom achieving desired goal of leading a free and dignified life–a consequence of the class struggle.
