Amitav Ghosh'sThe Shadow Linesshows that the force of nationalism in the quest for freedom can be the source of violence; a violence that killed Tridib. Since Thamma is an ardent and rigid nationalist, she did many things for preserving nationality but the sorrowful matter is that her contribution towards war became good for nothing that strengthened the division and demarcation among the people. So, by using different characters, the writer questions the validity of geographical boundaries and celebrates the union of aliens pulled together by self-propelling empathy and attachment. Hence, the writer, focuses on global culture for the co-existence and further says that there is no solid space either geographically or culturally.en_US
