A Comparative Study on Relativization Inenglish and Tharu Language

Abstract

This thesis entitled "Relativization in English and Tharu" has been carriedout to identify relativizers in the Tharu language and to compare andcontrast them with those of Englishlanguage.Iused both primary andsecondary sources of data. The sample of the study consisted of 60 nativespeakers of Tharu. The informants for this study wereselected from threeVDCsof Saptari district viz.Mainhasahasrabahu,Kalyanpur andFulbariya.I used judgemental non-random sampling procedure to samplethe population.I used twotypes oftools for data collection viz.questionnaire and interview schedule.A set of questionnaire was used toelicit the data from Tharu informants who wereliterate and educated.Iconducted interview with those people who were uneducated and for theEnglish language the data were extracted from secondary sources.Ifoundout that the Tharu language has more or lesssimilar number ofrelativizerslike those ofthe English language, Ialsofound that in Tharu,relative clauseoccurs in all three positions: sentence-initial, sentence-medial and sentence final position but in English relative clauseoccursonlyin sentence medial and final position. The thesis contains four chapters. The first chapter contains generalbackground, review of the related literature, objectives of the study,significance of the study and definition of the specific terms. The secondchapter includes sources of data, sample population, tools of datacollection, process of data collection and limitations of the study.Similarly, the third chapter comprises analysis and interpretation of thedata obtained from the field and secondary sources. Finally, the fourthchapter contains the findings and recommendations. References andappendices are mentioned in the end.
