Abstract
The present study entitled "An Analysis of the Vocabulary Used in the English Textbook for Grade Two" is an attempt to study the vocabulary items used in the textbook for grade two in terms of total number, parts of speech, frequency,syllable structure, morphological structure and word structure. Basically, all the vocabulary items used in the English textbook for grade two are derived from the secondary source for this study. The researcher used table of data under different headings.The major findings of this study are: nouns occupy the highest number of vocabulary items and articles, conjunctions and quantifiers occupy the lowest number of vocabulary items. Similarly, abbreviated and contracted forms are used 3 and 12 times respectively in the textbook. Among 396 total words, indefinite article 'a' has the highest number of frequency.
The study is divided into four chapters. Chapter one introduces the study in terms of general background, review of the related literature, objective of the study,significance of the study and definition of the specific terms. Chapter two deals with the methodology adopted for the study under which the sources of data, tools of data collection,process of data collection and limitations of the study are presented. Chapter three consists of analysis and interpretation of vocabulary items. Mainly descriptive and analytical approaches have been used for the purpose. Chapter four discusses the major findings and recommendations of the study.
