Abstract
The study of knowledge, attitude on STDs, and HIV/AIDS among Adolescent of Higher
Secondary School level's students in selected school of Nawalparasi district, is mainly
based on primary data collected from two higher secondary schools of Sunwal VDC in
2010. The main objective of the study is to examine the knowledge and attitudes on STDs
and HIV/AIDS among higher secondary school's adolescent students particularly about
modes of transmission, method of prevention of STDs and HIV/AIDS.
The sample size is 130 students of the selected higher secondary school and selected by
systematic Random Sampling Method. Out of the total sample size of 130 students, 52
are boys and 78 are girls. They are from both grades eleven and twelve. The higher
proportion of the respondents is in 17 years of age, which is accounted for 40.8 percent.
Most of the respondents were Hindu (81.5%) by Religion. The majority of the
respondents (29.2%) one Brahmin, Magar and Chhetri constitute second and third rank
respectively 40% respondents' father has educational level of SLC and above. Whereas,
the 20% mother have SLC and above majority of the respondents 91.5 percent are
unmarried. It was also observed that many of the respondents were known about syphilis,
Gonorreahea and total Respondents know about the HIV/AIDS. Among the 97.6 percent
respondents reported that the main way of transmission of STDs is sexual contact with
infected persons. Radio followed by television remained the source of STIs and
HIV/AIDS. All of the respondents know the full form of HIV/AIDS.
Majority of the Respondents (92.9 percent) said that reproductive parts affected by STDs.
Most of them respondents answered sexual contact as a major mode of transmission of
HIV/AIDS. Many has knowledge on the avoid sex with multiple partner is the major way
to prevents transmission of HIV/AIDS. Most of the respondents (80.8 percent) reported
that the drug addicts are vulnerable to HIV/AIDS in the society. Majority of the
Respondents have accepted AIDS infected persons all of them die which is accounted for
44.6 percent.
It is concluded that the knowledge and attitudes on STDs and HIV/AIDS of higher
secondary are almost universal. Respondents from grade 11& 12 are more knowledgeable
on transmission of STDs and HIV/AIDS, Syndrome of STDs and HIV/AIDS and
preventive method of STDs and HIV/ AIDS.
