A Study on Cohesion in Dialogue: A Case of Symphony

Abstract

The research work entitled “A Study of Cohesion in Dialogue: A Case of Symphony” was conducted with an aim of finding out grammatical and lexical cohesion in the dialogues selected from the book ‘Symphony’ for grade 3, 4 and 5. For that purpose 18 dialogues were selected by using judgmental sampling procedure. Observation was used as a major tool for collecting data. The overall findings of the research show that both grammatical and lexical cohesion have been found in dialogues where reference and conjunction are found frequent in use than other cohesive devices. It is found that grammatical devices are used more in comparison to lexical device. The study consists of four chapters, Chapter one consists of general background of the study, review of the related literature, objectives of the study, significance of the study and definitions of the special terms. Chapter two deals with the methodology adopted to carry out the research. It includes sources of data, tools for the data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Chapter three consists of analysis and interpretation of the data. Chapter four incorporates findings and recommendations. On the basis of the analysis and interpretation, some significant findings are listed, and on the basis of these findings some recommendations are made. This chapter is followed by references and appendix.
