Abstract
This research on William Golding’s Lord of the Flies unfolds how excessive
attachment leads to tension between Order and Chaos of human self. When the
established norms and values which give a solid shape to form a society. In course of
exploring the tension between two main characters, Jack and Ralph of the role
analyzed the representative figures of the post World War II people. Through those
characters, this project unveils that when objective world turns hostile, the inhabitants
relapse to their orderly world into chaos. Here, characters recourse to the emotional
retreat to the past and the tension among the friends explores the characters from
within and makes the world disorderly. The frequent use of symbols conch and fire
adds evidence to their obsession for tension between order and chaos. The post war
man has been represented through the setting of deserted island depicting socially
disorder English school children William Golding is trying to portray is that Britain
and the western world are actually quite fortunate civilizations as we have an ordered
and well structured society unlike the boys on the island. Just as the boys struggle
with the conflict between civilization and savagery on the island the outside world is
gripped in a similar conflict. In this research the Tension between Order and Chaos
after the post World War II is clearly established.
