English and Dumi Rai Kinship Terms: A comparative Study

Abstract

This thesis entitled “English and Dumi Rai Kinship Terms: A Comparative Study”has been carried out to compare English and DumiRai kinship terms of both consanguineal and a ffinal types from the perspectives of both male and female ego. To accomplish the objectives of the study the researcher collected dumi kinship terms from Dumi native speakers using oral-structured interview which were selected through snowball sampling procedure but English kinship terms were taken from secondary sources of data. The major findings of the study are: In English, kinsmen are addressed by the name inmost of the cases but in Dumi, kinsmen are addressed by the certain terms,so the number of kinship terms is greater in Dumi than in English. Similarly,in English, there is no any distinction between elder and younger kinship relations where as there is distinction between elder and younger. This thesis comprises four chapters. The first chapter includes general background, review of the related literature, objectives of the study,significance of the study, and definition of various kinship terms. Similarly,the second chapter deals with sources of data, sample of the study, tools for data collection, process of data collection, and limitations of the study. The third chapter comprises the analysis and interpretation of collected data and the fourth chapter deals with findings and recommendations of the study.
