This thesis entitled "Encouraging and Warning in English andDoteli" is an attempt tofind out the forms of encouraging and warning in Doteli and to compare them with theforms in the English language. I utilized both primary and secondary sources of data forthis study. The sample of the study consisted of 60 native speakers of Doteli language. They were selected using judgmental non-random sampling procedure. A questionnaireconsisting thirty open ended questions was used as the tool for data collection.Similarly, secondary data were taken from Van Ek. (1975), Matreyek (1983) and Blundellet al. (2009). After analyzing the collected data forty-three forms of encouraging andforty-eight forms of warning were found in the Doteli language. Along withidentification of the forms their similarities and differences with the forms of the samelanguage functions in English were distinguished after analyzing the collected datacomprehensively. And it is found that both languages haveformal, temperate andinformal forms of encouraging and warning. For example, 'aaramle sikdya hau (you willlearn easily)', 'naroi hoi raichha (Nice going)' and 'darei jan (don't be afraid)' are usedrespectively in Doteli for encouraging. But Doteli forms have SOV pattern whereasEnglish forms have SVO pattern, for example, 'yad rakhei (keep mindfulness)' in Doteli. The thesis is divided into five different chapters. The first chapter, 'Introduction'includes the background, statement of the problem, rationale, objectives, researchquestions, significance, and delimitations of the study. The second chapter reflects thestore house of the knowledge related to this study with review of the theoreticalliterature and empirical literature followed by conceptual framework. The third chapterdeals with the methodology employed to conduct the study. It gives information aboutthe design of the study, population and sample, sampling procedure, data collectiontools, data collection procedure and data analysis and interpretation procedure.Collected data are presented, analyzed and interpreted in the fourth chapter. It dealswith the forms of encouraging and warning in English and Doteli and comparison on thebasis of formality and rate of recurrence of the forms. The fifth chapter summarizes andconcludes the whole study in the first two sections. And some implications of the study are presented in the third section. The chapter is followed by references and appendixesto make the study reliable, valid and authentic.en_US
