dc.description.abstractThispresentstudyentitled "The Proficiencyinthe Useof CompoundPrepositionsby Grade Nine Students"is about the use of compoundprepositions. It is a highly difficult and confusing grammatical item forthe Englishassecond language learners. Many students are likely tocommit mistakesin the use of compound prepositions. The mainobjective of this study was to find out the proficiency of grade ninestudents in the use of compound prepositions in general. Along with thisobjective, the comparison has been made between urbanvs ruralgovernmentaidedVs. private schools, boys Vs girls.In order todetermine the proficiency of grade nine students,a set of test items wasdevised andadministered to testthe students of selected schools. The testitems consisted of six questionsandadministeredinfour schoolsofKathmandu district.Out ofthefour schools,two werepublic andtwoschools. Twenty students from each school were selected for the purpose.Hence, the population for the study was eighty students.After the datacollection, they were analyzed, interpreted. Based on the results ofthefindings,recommendations have been presentedat the end.The studentsfrom the urban area were more proficient than the students of the ruralarea. The study consists of four different chapters. The first chapters deals withintroduction to the study,general background of the study, a shortdescription of grammar and preposition, description of compoundprepositionsand ofthe significance and the objectives of the study.Thesecond chapter deals with the methodology adopted while carrying outthe study. It describes how the test items were prepared, what sorts oftools were used, how they were administered and the limitations of thestudy. The third chapter presents the analysis and interpretation of thedata collected fromthevarious schools. The data obtained have beenanalyzed and interpreted with the help of statistical measures. Theaverage marks and comparisonof the marks between different variableshave been includedin this chapter. Lastly, the fourth chapter states thefindings of the study. On the basis of analysis and interpretation,theexisting problemshave been identified and stated in theform of majorfindings of the research followed by recommendationsand pedagogicalimplications.en_US
