Abstract

The research entitled Perception of Secondary level English Language Teachers towards Testing Listening was carried to explore secondary level English language teacher’s perceptions on testing listening. Considering the objectives the primary data were collected using the questionnaire to thirty secondary level English teachers teaching at different schools of Gorkha district. The participants were selected using simple random sampling procedure. A set of questionnaire was used as tools for data collection. The data obtained from respondents have been analyzed and interpreted using statistical tools. The study found that the teachers are positive towards testing listening. Additionally, large number of students in class, noisy classroom environment and inadequate materials are the challenges faced by English language teachers while testing listening skill. Cassette player is only source of testing listening, but there is not cassette player in many schools. The finding shows that all participant teachers expressed curriculum designers and text book writers should give equal importance to designing the test items in testing listening. This thesis consists of five chapters. Each chapter is an important of this study. The first chapter deals with the introduction of the study which consists of background of the study, statement of problem, objectives if the study, research ‘questions, significance of the problem, delimitation of the study and operational definitions of key terms. Similarly, the second chapter consists of review of theoretical as well as empirical literature and implications for the study: more importantly, it includes the conceptual framework. Likewise, the third chapter deals with the methods and procedures of the study which cover design and method of the study, population sample and sampling strategy, research tools, source of data, data collection procedure, data analysis procedure and ethical considerations. Then, the fourth chapter deals with the analysis and interpretations of data. Finally, fifth chapter deals with findings, conclusion of the study and implications of the study.
