Abstract
On the surface of Oliver Twist of Charles Dickens seems to be a just social
depiction of the later 19th century England and its significant is only to the readers of
the Victorian society, from where the plot comes. But the closer analysis of the plot
reveals that the novel carries the religious theme from Christian Doctrine. Especially,
the protagonist of this novel, Oliver Twist’s life resembles the life of Jesus Christ
Besides this, some of the other characters, too, in the novel resemble Christ-figures
and some devil-figures and play important role inthe novel. And finally, we can say
that the novel is set implicitly in Biblical environment despite its explicit 19th century
England setting. So, this novel has significance in among the Christian readers.
