Abstract
The main thrust of this thesis is to explore the protagonist’s moves against
patriarchy and her failure in the struggle. The main problems in the study are what
drives her to revolt against patriarchy and why she suffers a failure in her mission.
The study proceeded with the objectives to investigate the reasons behind her revolt
and her submission to patriarchy finally. Radical feminism has been used as the tool
for analysing the text. No other aspects have been included in the research. Divided
into three chapters, the study concludes that a mother’s love for her children and
feeling of duty and responsibility are much powerful than the intention of being
emancipated, so Meribeth gives up her attempts to revolt and surrenders to the
traditional practices as a dutiful, responsible housewife.
