Abstract

At first, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor Prof. Dr. Amma Raj Joshi, for his guidance and support. The final shape of this dissertation has resulted from his persistent supervision and inspiration. His valuable comments and suggestions have enhanced this dissertation extraordinarily. I would not have been working on O’Neill’s plays, and archetypal ideas in them without his inspiring me about them. Therefore, my indebtedness to him transcends the power of words to express it. I am grateful to my co-supervisor Prof. Dr. Anand Sharma who gave me useful sources and direction in the theory of the archetypes. He acquainted me with both the ideas and the thinkers in this field. His comments and suggestions have contributed significantly to bring my research to this form. I am grateful to my honorable teacher Prof. Dr. Shreedhar Prasad Lohani. His support in shaping my ideas in this thesis as well as in my career remains indelible. I have had the honor to receive his grace for almost three decades now. I remain indebted to him forever for his compassion, encouragement and support.
