Abstract
The present research foregrounds consciousness of subaltern characters to
expose their resistance to the elite upper class people. Sushma Joshi’s story collection
The End of the World presents subaltern characters like Gopi, Bishnu, Gautamay,
Harka and Hasta Kathayat of different backgrounds, with the consciousness of elite’s
domination, exploitation prejudice and sub-ordination meted out upon them and their
revolt against it. The revolt however made by them seems to be indirect and symbolic
in presentation, it helps establish their agency by resisting the mode of domination
and causes of marginalization.
