English Loan Words in Nepali Text books:A Descriptive Study

Abstract

The present dissertation entitled "English Loan Words in NepaliTextbooks" aims at finding out the English loan words used in the textbooksof lower secondary level to higher secondary level, analyzing word's classesand identifying language functions of the occurrences. Observation sheetwere prepared to collect data and according to the objectives of the studythey were analyzed. For such words which were in common use but were not available inthe NBSK the Nepali language experts were consulted and tried to elicit theviews of them. This thesis altogether contains four chapters. Chapter one deals withan introduction. It consists of general background, an introduction toliterature, forms of literature, an overview of code switching and codemixing, an introduction to loan words, factors leading to loan words, words,review of literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. Chapter two describes the methodology applied in order to carry outthis research. It consists of sources of data, tools for data collection, processof data collection and limitations of the study. Chapter three deals with analysis and interpretation of data. It consistsof description of linguistic units, classification of word class, identificationof assimilated and non-assimilated words and differentiating languagefunctions of the occurrences and views of the experts in conclusion. Chapter four presents the summary of finding, pedagogicalimplications and recommendation for further research.
