Abstract
The research titled Code-mixing in the English Classroom: A Case of
Secondary Level Community Schools in Lalitpur District aimed to explore and
analyze the types of code mixing used in classroom interactions and the reason behind
using code mixing in the English classroom. The study adopted basic qualitative
design. Classroom observations and unstructured interviews served as the main tools
for the data collection. This study shows the pervasive use of code mixing and single
word insertions in teachers' responses. At the same time, the study demonstrates the
rare use of the alternative meaning in classroom interactions. Moreover, teachers
mixed codes in English classroom for different reasons namely; lack of resources,
multilingual backgrounds and absence of appropriate terms. Further, the findings also
suggest that the appropriate use of code-mixing fosters the confidence and motivation
among students and teachers.
