Abstract
The thesis entitled A Semantic Analysis of English and Bhojpuri
Verbs is an attempt to describe and to have an analysis of semantic
system of verbs in the English and Bhojpuri language. The thesis
presents a very careful and controlled analysis and description of the
semantic system of the selected verbs of the English language then the
same are compared with the Bhojpuri verbs. The data for the Bhojpuri
verbs were collected through unstructured interviews with eighty
educated native speakers of the Bhojpuri language and the researcher
also utilized his intuition. Data for the English verbs were colleted from
various dictionaries and thesaurus as secondary sources. The researcher
has found that the Bhojpuri and English verbs do not have semantic
overlapping in most of the cases. The English and Bhjojpuri verbs have
semantic equivalence or one to one correlation in most of the cases and
divergence and convergence and finally semantic inclusion.
The thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter deals with
introduction. It consists of general background, importance of the
English language, introduction to the Bhojpuri language, introduction to
verb, basic concept of semantics, componential analysis and contrastive
analysis, review of the related literature, objectives of the study,
significance of the study and definition of specific terms. The second
chapter deals with methodology in which the sources of data, tools and
procedures of data collection and limitations of the study are included. Similarly, the third chapter comprises of analysis and interpretation of
the data obtained. Finally, the fourth chapter encompasses findings and
recommendations
