The Need of English in Diplomatic Dealings

Abstract

This research is an investigation entitled"The Need of English in Diplomatic Dealings"comprising the motive to ascertain the necessity of the English language for the personnel employed in diplomatic field. Both primary and secondary sources of data were used. A questionnaire was the main research tool used for the study, which included both close-ended and open-endedquestions. Six foreign embassies (Royal Thai Embassy, Embassy of Denmark,Sri-Lanka, Australian Embassy, French Embassy and Canadian Embassy)situated in Kathmandu Valley and five personnel from every embassy wereselected by using purposive sampling procedure. The professional staffworking in six foreign embassies had mixed nationalities. The overall findings of the research highlight the importance and need of English in diplomatic dealings. It includes four chapters. Chapter one incorporates general background, (The global effect of English, justifications of becoming English truly global,English as 'unifier' or 'divider' in Nepal, English for specific purpose, definition of ESP in term of hallmarks, diplomatic dealings, and meaning of diplomacy),review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. Chapter two introduces methodology which includes sources of data(primary and secondary), sample of the study, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of the data collection, and limitations of the study.Chapter three deals with the analysis and interpretation. The data were analyzed, interpreted and presented into four main categories (analysis of purposive need of the English language,analysis of agreement based questions,analysis of choice based questions and analysis of logic based questions) from the questionnaire supported with other sub categories by using tables and figures accompanied by textual discussion. Chapter four comprises findings and recommendations having a brief restatement of the problem concerned with the need of English in diplomatic dealings.
