Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms is a modern tragedy in various senses. The novel is a quest of a couple; Frederic and Catherine, who are in search for self and solace in their life, in a chaotic condition marred by war. Frederic takes part in war like a machine and has lost all humane sentiments, unless he meets Catherine, a nurse, who is also recovering from a personal mourn. It is a brilliant evocation of how a modern man falls prey to the apathy of modern machines; a modern tragedy.en_US
