Abstract
This Thesis entitledSoliloquies in Shakespeare's Hamlet. This research focused on one of
the dramatic techniques playwright used in their plays to understand situation and to give
more effect; this literary technique is soliloquy. Soliloquy is a popular literary device often
used in drama to reveal the innermost thoughts of a character to the audience. The researcher
used qualitative and descriptive analysis in this research adopting analytic approach. In which
play Hamlet was used analytical through analysing seven soliloquies spoken by Hamlet. The
researcher defined what the term soliloquy means, its important, dramatic technique, and
literary stylistic analysis of drama, how Soliloquies help readers and audiences to understand
situation ,how readers know types of Soliloquies. So as to link the research questions and the
findings of the research, a detailed explanation of situation and types of Hamlet's Soliloquies
. Soliloquies in Shakespeare's play may divided into four basic types; Plain, Attended,
Soliloquy with props, Soliloquy as Dialogue. Many of Hamlet's soliloquies are Plain
soliloquy.Plain Soliloquy is the simplest. It's involves a character speaking alone, with no
other character on stage. "O that this too too solid flesh would melt" and "O what a rogue and
peasant slave am I" are Plain Soliloquy. Attended Soliloquy with a simple gesture, an actor
playing a characater can send clear signals to the audience that he is talking to them or to
some other characters on stage. These Hamlet soliloquies are in Attended Soliloquy; "drink
hot blood / and do such bitter business as the day /would quake to look on". "Now might I do
it pat, now a is a praying /And now I'll do't", to be or not to be: that is the question. I can not
find soliloquy with props, soliloquy as Dialogue in Hamlet's soliloquies.
