This thesis is an attempt to find out the effectiveness of teaching vocabulary through games for primary level. It was carried out practically and comparatively. Forty students studying in grade nine from a private school "Shree Martyrs Memorial English Boarding School, Biratnagar, was the sample population for this work. The students were pre-tested to determine their proficiency level. They were divided in two groups on the basis of odd-even ranking of performance of the pre-test. After dividing them into two groups, one group was taught by using game technique but another one usual technique. After having completed the teaching after twenty classes, the post test was undertaken using the same pre-test items. After that, the results of both pre-test were compared to determine the effectiveness of the two techniques. This thesis contains four chapters. The first deals with general background of the study, review of the related literature, objectives of the study, and significance of the study. The second chapter includes the research methodology, data procedures and limitations of the study. The third chapter deals with analysis and interpretation of data which has been done on the basis of the differences between the average score in percentage of each group in pre-test and post-test. The group with higher increment in percentage has been considered better. Furthermore, t-test is used to test the statistical significance. Chapter four includes the findings and recommendations with the help of analysis and interpretations of data which reveals the fact that the group taught by focusing on game technique performed significantly better than usual way of teaching. Final part of the thesis entails references and appendices.en_US
