Abstract
The present research study entitled “Free Writing Proficiency of Grade Ten Students”attempts to find out the actual free writing proficiency of the tenth graders of Bardiyadistrict in terms of organization of information, proper use of mechanics of writing,clarity of writing, cohesion and coherence and economy and completeness. To carryout the research, the researcher selected ten secondary (five private and fivegovernment-aided) schools of Bardiya district by using non-random judgmentalsampling procedure and hundred students (ten from each school) by using simplerandom sampling procedure. The research was carried out using both primary andsecondary sources of data. Aset of test items consistingofparagraph writing,dialogue writing, letter writing, report writing and essay writing was the tool for datacollection. The data were analyzed and interpreted on the basis of the tabulated data inaccordance with the set objectives. The findings showthat the total free writingproficiency of the students was poor. The students of private schoolsare seen moreproficient than the students of government-aided schools. Among the students of allselected schools, the students ofJanajyoti Higher Secondary Boarding School are themost proficient and the students of Shree Chure Higher Secondary School are the leastproficient. Similarly, the students are most proficient in dialogue writing and leastproficient in essay writing. This thesis comprises four main chapters. The first chapter deals with introductionwhich consists of general background, review of the related literature, objectives ofthe study and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with themethodology used to carry out the research: the sources of data, sample population,sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection andlimitations of the study. The third chapter consists of analysis and interpretation of thedata to find outthe actual free writing proficiency of the students. The collected datawere analyzed and interpreted by using simple statistical tools like average,percentage and descriptive approach. The fourth chapter presents the findings derivedfrom the analysis and the interpretation of the data. It also suggests some recommendations on the basis of the findings. The final section of the study includesthe references and appendices.
