Abstract
Samrat Upadhyay's The Guru of Love shows the fluctuating and contingent
self of the male protagonist Ramchandra, who is represented as a character driven by
the internal forces to love as well as lust. He is depicted as such a person who denies
the assistance of others and tries to do the things himself in which he defies the
natural laws and conventions. He behaves unusually and talks as if he has lost his
way, lost faith in himself and in his own future, but tries to persuade himself and
enjoys what ever is possible to obtain in his lives, though he knows that his life is
almost insignificant in the post-modern societies. Upadhya's book, thus, is a
representation of the self and postmodern self is the tool that he uses to show the
dilemma and contingency of Ramchandra, which is a postmodern subject.
