A Semantic Analysis of English and Tharu Verbs

Abstract

This study deals with the semantic analysis of English and Tharu verbs. The main objective of this study was to carry out semantic analysis of English and Tharu verbs on the basis of: a) one to one correlation of meaning, b) divergence and convergence of meaning and c) semantic overlapping and semantic inclusion. The verbs were collected through the structured interview with eighty Tharu native speakers from Agyauli VDC – 8, Nawalparasi. The respondents were selected by using nonrandom judgmental sampling procedure. Similarly, the researcher adopted purposive random sampling procedure to select respondents from literate and illiterate category as well as respondents from different occupational background like: farmers, teachers, social workers and housewives. The main finding of this study is that there are inherent differences in semantic systems of English and Tharu verbs. It has also found that there are more instances of divergence and convergence of meaning and one to one correlation of meaning than semantic overlapping and semantic inclusion of meaning. This thesis has been divided into four chapters. Chapter one comprises introduction, background, review of the related literature, objectives, significance of study. Chapter two comprises methodology in which sources of data, tools and procedures of data collection and limitations of the study are included. Similarly, chapter three includes the analysis and interpretation of the English and Tharu verbs. Finally, chapter four comprises the findings and recommendations of the study.
