Abstract

The research entitled, ''English Code Mixing in Nepali novel Phirphire'', is a study of English code-mixing in the Nepali novel "Phirphire" written by Buddhisagar. It centralizes to the analyses in to the use of English code in the novel "Phirphire".It aims to find out and analyze English code-mixing in terms of major word classes, frequency of occurrence of the word and context in which code-mixing takes place and find out the attitude of literary writers' and readers' towards English code-mixing in the Nepali novel. The primary source of the data of this study were 20 literary writers and readers from Sunsari district. The researcher used purposive sampling procedure for the collection of the data. The finding of this research shows that there is a large amount of English codes mixing in the novel "Phirphire". Nouns were used maximally followed by verbs, adjectives and adverbs respectively. Regarding the context of code-mixing, the writer was seen to have mixed English codes on such a context as: talking about education, film, science and technology, invention, competition, postcard, money, dress, vehicles, transportation, media and communication etc. The study has been divided into five chapters. The first chapter deals with introduction which, in turn, consists of general background, statement of the problem, rationale of the study, objectives of research, research questions, significance of the study and delimitation of the study. The second chapter deals with the review of related literature and conceptual framework which consists of review of related literature, implication of the reviewed literature, theoretical framework and conceptual framework. The third chapter deals with methods and procedures of the study which consists of design of the study, sources of data, population of study, sampling procedure and sample size and tools of data collection. The fourth chapter deals with results and discussions which consists of results, frequency wise analysis of English expressions, context wise analysis of code-mixing, analysis of literary writers' attitude towards English code-mixing in Nepali novel and analysis of literary readers' perception towards English codes in Nepali novel. The fifth chapter deals with summary, conclusion, and implication.
