Abstract

A thesis entitled 'Role of remittance in rural livelihood of Nepal: A case study of Sisautiya VDC of Sarlahi District has been conducted, the general objectives of the study are to examine the demographic profile of migrant's worker of the study area, to explore the cause of migration and destination selection. To analyze the impact of remittances on rural livelihood and to analyze the impact of remittances in the development of society. This Study has been limited to 120 households. This study has been carried out on the basis of exploratory research design. This study has been based on the qualitative and quantitative both methods. This study has been based on the primary as well as secondary data, the structures questionnaire or an unstructured interviews and observations method has been applied to generate the primary data. There are various causes for going abroad for employment in the Nepalese context. Some major causes are lower living standard, insufficiency of food, cloth and lower quality of housing,insecurity and unemployment, landlessness and ineffective education system. The research shows more no. of the migrants who went to abroad belonged to the age group of 25-30 years (45%)where most of them were males (66.66%) and were married ones (66.67%). In the survey it wasfound that most of the people who went there were associated with agriculture and had a pooreducation i.e. below S.L.C. People who had gone here belonged to a poor background so as theywent abroad minimum time to work in foreign country was of 2 years. The research shows that most of the migrants were from a poor background living a poor livelihood so due to different reasons they had to go abroad among which unemployment, lack of facilities , indebtedness,social conflict etc are the main reasons. As a result going abroad for work has propounded that most of the household whose members had gone abroad has improved their livelihood and has brought quite a change in their lives and property i.e. people has constructed brick houses,fulfilment of required things, improvement in the field of education and health as well. As to conclude we can say that remittance has played a significant role to enhance the productive cycles of rural economy. For instance, present study found that most of the people who had gone abroad have improved their livelihood and made better their lives in term of daily consumption,education, health as well as their properties. It was also found that due to the huge amount of remittances coming from abroad has just not only brought but some negative impacts like robbery, increasing drug abuse, crime etc. has been found. So, as to bring some changes in ruralareas some technical trainings should be established. With that some polices regarding employment, loan facilities with cheap interest, education, health too can be promoted as well.
