Social Deictic Expression in English and Magar

Abstract

The thesis entitled "Social Deictic Expression in English andMagar"attempts to compare and contrast social deictic systems of the twolanguages: English andMagar. The researcher used both primary andsecondary sources of data. The population of the study consisted ofeighty-fourMagarnative speakers to elicit social deictic expressionsbutEnglish social deictic expressionswere taken from secondary sources. Aset of questionnaire was prepared as a tool for data collection. Aftercollecting the data, they were checked by the researcher being aparticipant observer for one week. Major findings of the study show thatthe Magar languagepossesses the second and thirdhonorific and nonhonorific personal pronouns which do not exist in English. Similarly,sincetheMagarlanguage is based on T/V distinction it has different levelof honorific suffixes, pronouns and terms which Englishlacks. This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one deals with generalbackgroundof the study.Chapter two is related to the methodology,which deals with sources of data, population of the study, samplingprocedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection andlimitations of the study. Chapter three deals with analysis andinterpretations of the data and chapter four incorporates findings andrecommendationsforpedagogic implications of the study.
