Pronominals in Chhulung and English

Abstract

The present study entitled, 'Pronominals in Chhulung and English: A Linguistic Comparative Study' attempts to compare and contrast pronominal systems of Chhulung and English. The researcher collected the data by using both primary and secondary sources. The researcher selected 80 Chhulung speakers by judgmental sampling procedure for Chhulung data. Similarly, English data were taken from secondary sources Aarts and Aarts (1986, p.48-56) and Quirk et al. (1985, p.333). Major findings of the study are that Chhulung has more number of pronouns in comparison to English. Chhulung has inclusive and exclusive pronouns in the first person dual and plural personal pronouns whereas English does not have inclusive and exclusive pronouns. Chhulung has singular, dual and plural distinction whereas English has only singular and plural distinction.

The thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter deals with the introduction part of study which consists of general background with many subtopics, namely a short introduction of English and Chhulung, overview of pronominal system, need and importance of contrastive analysis, review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. The second chapter describes the methodology which includes sources of data collection, sampling procedure and limitations of the study. Similarly, the third chapter contains the analysis, interpretation, presentations and comparison of the data. The fourth chapter contains findings, recommendations of the study.
