Submission and Subversion of the Women in Churchill’s Top Girls

Abstract

This research explores the marginalized conditions of the women characters and their subversion against the oppressions of the patriarchal ideologies and elite class cultures for getting their rights with reference to Carol Churchill’s Top Girls. It attempts to depict the oppressions of the women by the women. The elite class women try to exploit the lower class women for getting their personal benefits. The character Marlene is a management director of a job agency, who represents the elite class women. She tries to suppress the women characters Isabella Bird, Dull Gret and Waitress on her job. On the other hand, they are also oppressed from the patriarchy as Isabella Bird is a poor widow, who is physically exploited from her lover, Jim. The subaltern women are marginalized not only in terms of the gender, class, religion, geography and the other ways but also from within the upper class women. For rectifying the domination and subordination of multitude, submissive women turn to be subversive, which is the core consciousness of Churchill’s Top Girls.
