Abstract
This research project tries to make an attempt to explore Gauri as a Subaltern
Female Character searching for an identity in Jhumpa Lahiri's novel The Lowland by
applying Subaltern perspective . In the novel Gauri and other subaltern figures try to
raise their voice in order to establish their identity but they have to lose many other
thing during their search. In order to establish one's own identity, the cultural setting
also plays pivotal role. The setting of the novel is in India and America as the
migration is another striking issues in the field of subaltern study. Gauri like subaltern
figure has to lose many familial and other relational bonds in the name of securing
own identity. While analyzing their attempt to raise their voice in India and America,
Gauri the subaltern figure has to fall in in-between space, from where they can return
nowhere. As the main crux of this study the subaltern characters' dislocation is
helping them to change their behavior. This research project is significant in order to
see how the subaltern figures are ready to sacrifice every thing sometimes life too in
order to get an identity but their voice is always dominated.
