A Study on Reliability in Terms of Split-Half Method

Abstract

The main aim of this study is to find out the reliability of test items by using split-half method in assessing reading skill. Eighty students of Sindhupalchock district were taken as sample population by random sampling procedure to collect the data. Two passages from class IX with five sets of questions were included in the question paper. Collected data and information were analyzed and interpreted by the researcher using different statistical tools. By analyzing the data the researcher found that the reliability of split-half method in assessing reading skill was high. The study consists of four chapters. The first chapter consists of introduction, general background, language teaching and testing, quality of good test, validity, reliability, split-half method, review of related literature, objective of the study and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with methodology which includes sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection, Process of setting questions and dividing into two halves and limitation of the study. The third chapter deals with analysis and interpretation of the collected data. By using different statistical tools, the data are analyzed in terms of school, sex and test items. The fourth chapter consists of findings and recommendations. References and appendices are also included in this thesis at the end.
