Abstract
It is a research study entitled "Effectiveness of SDI service for medical professionalsrelating to Central Medical library, NGMCTH, Kohalpur". SDI service is a personalizedcurrent awareness service meant for an individual or a group of users having identicalinformation needs to keep them abreast of the latest development in the field of their interest.The statement of problem is that effectiveness of SDI service of this library has not beenstudied to improve it. The objective of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of and toevaluate the SDI service system for medical professional relating to Central Medical Library,NGMCTH, Kohalpur where it has been carried out from 2065/3/10 to 2065/5/28. There are10 reviews of literatures that discuss mechanism procedures, implementation, evaluation,refinement and development which are related to the study. It focuses the SDI service of thecentral medical library, NGMCTH, Kohalpur. The descriptive and survey methods havebeen used. 50 library users only faculty members and medical officers who are receivingmanual SDI service are randomly selected and data are collected from questionnaire. Thecollected data have been analyzed qualitatively and illustrated in necessary tables, diagramsand chart forms for analysis. Out of total library users included, 23(46%), 10(20%), 8(16%)and 9(18%) visit the library regularly, Irregularly, frequently and sometimes. 15(30%) and35(70%) visit the library with purpose of patient care and research, teaching, patient care,continuing education respectively. 38(76%) search information with help of library staffs and12(24%) direct method .42(84%) responded that SDI service is major value and only 8 (16%)responded that it is moderate volume. Except 15 (30%) for patient care, 35(70%) takeadvantage of SDI service for research, teaching, patient care and continuous education.18(36%) have received SDI service in time and 32(64%) have complained not receivedservice in time. The frequency of SDI service provided to 12(24%), 21(42%), 5(10%) and12(24%) is regularly, irregularly, frequently and sometimes respectively, All the users50(100%) read the article if SDI citation is pertinent. 20(40%) have found many relevantarticles and 30(60%) have found few relevant articles. 17(34%) satisfies with SDI servicewhereas 33(66%) show dissatisfaction to the service. Among 33 dissatisfaction users,4(12.12%) are because of too many irrelevant articles and no description of topics which theyhad request, 12(36.36%%) are due to uncover adequately their research , Similarly
6(18.18%) are because of changing their topics and interesting in new topics , 3(9.1%)aredue to overflow of many articles and like to topic narrowed and 8(24.24%) are because of no current information. 5 (10%) are much better informed, 14(28%) are somewhat better informed and 31(62%) are not better informed but certain of not missing anything important.All users 50(100%) desire to continue SDI service including the users who had considered the service to be moderate value. It is found that more library users visit the library regularly with purpose of research teaching patient care, and continuing education, it is major valuable service to them, they user it for research, teaching, patient care and continuing education purpose, receiving service more irregularly and sometimes than regularly and frequently,read the article if SDI citation is pertinent, least users are receiving service in time, finding relevant articles, satisfied and better informed and all users desire to continue the participation in this service. It is concluded that SDI system is an effective and a highly acceptable current awareness information service to keep up to date with current information related to library users' need. So far, the performance of providing SDI service to its users by the library is not satisfactory. It recommends warmly welcome library users, friendly behavior, responsibility of providing information service, building up useful collections ,properly trained library staffs, knowledge of literature the library collects and needs of library users, ability to act as shrewed matchers between information sources and users, use of computer catalogue, ascertain accurately information needs of users, providing relevant and current information, feedback of users, constants evaluation of users profiles, use of e-journals sources such as HINARI, COCHRANGE, other medical databases, availability of pertinent cited articles, and continuity to provide SDI service to its users effectively and efficiently.Keywords:-SDI service, Information services, Medical libraries,
